Play therapy resources I am loving this week
A must have for family and individual therapists working with children and it is FREE: http://www.lianalowenstein. com/e-booklet.pdf
The Invisible String by Patrice Karst --- LOVE this one. It speaks to kids who are grieving, who have a parent far way because they are in the foster care system, kids who have a parent in the military, are splitting time between parents due to divorce, kids who have had multiple placements in foster care, kids who suffer from separation anxiety... kids who need to know that anger does not take away love... it is a must have.
A Terrible Thing Happened - A story for children who have witnessed violence or trauma by Margaret M. Holmes ---- This is another generic book. It can be for for children who have witnessed any kind of violent or traumatic episode, including physical abuse, domestic violence, school or gang violence, accidents, homicide, suicide, and natural disasters such as floods or fire. It also helps explain the therapist's role to the child.
It goes a little something like this:
"Sherman Smith saw the most terrible thing happen. At first he tried to forget about it, but soon something inside him started to bother him. He felt nervous for no reason. Sometimes his stomach hurt. He had bad dreams. And he started to feel angry and do mean things, which got him in trouble. Then he met Ms. Maple, who helped him talk about the terrible thing that he had tried to forget. Now Sherman is feeling much better."
